Logic2 consumes much CPU when not used

If I have the Logic2 application running but not using it (not even the active window) it still consumes ~8 % CPU.

If I disconnect the USB cable, it still consumes ~8% CPU. This is not a big problem but I use a laptop so it drains the battery.

I use Logic-2.4.40-linux-x64.

I ran a quick test on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on an Intel i5 7200U (2 cores / 4 threads)

  • No USB devices connected
  • Logic version 2.4.46
    Downloads | Saleae
  • Try demo Logic device > selected [DEMO] Logic 8
  • Software idle from there (i.e. no recording running)
  • I’m getting ~4-5% Processor usage, which drops to 0% occasionally (Resources > Processes)

Can you share your PC specs and try Logic 2.4.46 above as well? Also, can you share what Linux distro you are running?

Logic 2.4.46 consumes the same amount of CPU as 2.4.40.

My computer has an Intel Core i3-10110U CPU.

I use Kubuntu 22.04.

I measure the CPU consumption using the top command.

~8 % CPU usage is not a problem for me. It is just that I expect an inactive program to consume 0-1 % CPU.

@jonas.aberg It looks like we have similar performance CPUs. I’ll try out the top command on my Ubuntu 26.04 LTS machine (it’s a fresh installation) to see what CPU usage I am getting at idle.

Our offices are closed tomorrow for a company holiday, but I’ll report back on my findings early next week.

I’m experiencing the same issue, if not worse on Fedora 41. Capture stopped, MSO disconnected from USB, 100% CPU usage on a single core.

Using Fedora latest, 13th gen I7 laptop, running Logic without anything connected shows about 40-50% of one core. I have 24 threads (I think 8 performance cores which are hyperthreaded and 8 economy cores which arent) so this equates to around 3-4% total CPU usage. My guess is that it more or less uses most of one thread so if you have a CPU with 12 total threads/cores you’d see more CPU usage than me but probably not actually more usage, if that makes sense. It does seem to be a smidgen power hungry when idling.

Just to add a data point: I don’t see the same behavior on my Debian 12 system with 8 logical cores, starting Logic 2.4.46 with no device attached, then capturing a few seconds of data with the demo device. The process hovers at 3.5% usage of a single core. I am, however, using a rather-less-common (I suspect) setup of LXDE viewed remotely via x2go. Your mileage will probably vary.

Also, allow me to recommend atop for a much-more detailed view of what’s going on with resource usage.
